Key Stage 3

In the Junior School (Years 8-10) all pupils experience a common curriculum. On entering the school, pupils are placed into one of three Attainment Bands on the basis of their Transfer Report from their Primary School and on data from Base Line Testing.

Their progress is monitored by the Head of House throughout the year and, on the basis of recommendations from Class Teachers, Form Teacher, and Heads of Departments, pupils can be re-allocated within the Year Group. Within each Band classes are mixed ability. Table 1 below shows the subjects currently studied at Key Stage 3.


Pupils are offered experiences in each of the Areas of Learning as defined by the requirements of the Revised Curriculum:

  •  English with Media Education

  •  Mathematics and Numeracy 

  •  The Arts (Art & Design, Drama, Music) 

  •  Environment And Society (Geography, History) 

  •  Learning for Life and Work (Home Economics, Employability, Local and Global Citizenship, Careers Education)

  •  Modern Languages (Irish, French)

  •  Science and Technology

  •  Physical Education

  •  Religious Education

  •  Using ICT

In addition, pupils followed a Personal Development and Social Education  Programme that is focused on 'values education' and CRED.
